Even though the Chinese had to deal with immigration problems and prejudice, they held on to many customs and traditions that are still practiced today. For example, wedding invitations are engraved in gold on red paper. These are considered colors of good fortune. The bride wears jade and gold. The groom’s family gives expensive gifts to the bride. Another celebration is the "red egg" ceremony. When children are one month old, their hair is cut for the first time. A red egg is then rubbed over the shaved head. This is supposed to bring them good fortune. (Staff Note: Photo 76-468) The dragon is an ancient Chinese symbol. It represents joy and sorrow. The dragon is often seen during the Chinese Lunar New Year, but it is also seen at civic affairs or private funerals. (Staff
