anniversary celebration,
June 8-11, 2006. |
It was another unforgettable four
days of spirited unity and harmony
at UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures
in downtown San Antonio. From June
8-11, the Texas Folklife Festival celebrated
35 years of bringing together people
of all ethnicities from across the
state to celebrate their cultural heritage
through delicious food, great music,
beautiful dance and unique arts and
crafts.
Of the participants who help make
this event possible, 18 groups and/or
individuals also celebrated 35 consecutive
years. And there were another 18 that
celebrated between 29-34 consecutive
years! It is this amazing dedication
to preserving our cultural traditions
that is a major ingredient in what
makes this festival so special.
And while many people remember the
first Texas Folklife Festival, which
was held from September 7-10, 1972,
they also lovingly remember the founder,
O.T. Baker. This was the first Texas
Folklife Festival that O.T. missed.
He passed away on January 24, 2006,
but remains with us in spirit.
Our special thanks to you for your
interest in cultural diversity and
preserving traditions; to our participants
whose commitment never ceases; to our
generous sponsors whose faith and financial
support helps to ensure the festival
continues; and to our visitors who
make it all possible.
It is our differences that make us
unique, but our commonalities that
bring us together. Thank you for another
memorable Texas Folklife Festival!
See you next year at the 36th annual
celebration of Texas’ cultures—June 8-10,
2007.
