Volunteer Opportunities
If you would like to organize volunteer opportunities for your company or organization in support of the Texas Folklife Festival, please contact the Special Events Department at the Institute of Texan Cultures, at 210-458-2275 or via email at itcspecialevents@utsa.edu.
Benefits of Volunteering
- By participating as a company/group in the Texas Folklife Festival, you will support your community, generate a feeling of goodwill and employees will have an opportunity to bond with their colleagues.
- Each volunteer will receive a wristband that allows free admission to the Texas Folklife Festival. Volunteers can use the wristband anytime during the Festival's four days if they do not remove the wristband during that time.
- Each group volunteering as an organization is encouraged to wear company T-shirts. This provides your company with highly visible exposure, as well as promotes the company spirit with the employees. Wearing company shirts also helps the Texas Folklife Festival staff by identifying each volunteer group.
Recruiting Volunteers
- Volunteers will sign up to work through an internally designated Volunteer Coordinator within their company or organization.
- Volunteer Coordinators: Once the Texas Folklife Festival volunteer office receives all availability forms from various companies/organizations, we will submit to you a list of exact times and positions for your group to fill. These positions will be blocked for your group and your organization will fill them. It is important to let us know if you foresee not having as many volunteers as you originally predicted. We will be in contact with you throughout the process and trust you will contact us if you have any questions during the recruitment phase.
Volunteer Orientation
- Individual Volunteers: Each volunteer is encouraged to attend a training session. However, please contact your Volunteer Coordinator with any questions or to ensure you receive all pertinent information.
- Volunteer Coordinators: We will host several Volunteer Orientation meetings in May and encourage all volunteers to attend. Dates and times will be announced. During the Orientation, volunteers will receive a briefing on job descriptions, check-in procedures, rules and guidelines, etc., and each will receive a packet of information including their job description, a Volunteer handbook, a VIA Park-and-Ride brochure and a wristband (valid for the Festival's four days).
- Some Volunteer Coordinators choose to attend the orientation and then take the material back to their companies/organizations and conduct on-site training. Please notify us if you will be doing this, so we may ensure you receive the individual volunteer packets you need to distribute to your participating volunteers.
The Texas Folklife Festival is the signature event sponsored by the Institute of Texan Cultures, one of the three campuses of the University of Texas at San Antonio. We are most grateful to the many corporate and civic partners whose support ensures our ability to continue preserving this rich tradition.
