Title Graphic, Black Seminoles in Texas and Mexico

The University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) at San Antonio, a multicultural institution focused on the history and culture of Texas, has initiated a program to document the history of the black Seminoles and is committed to assisting them in efforts to preserve their cultural traditions. Included in this concerted effort is the duplication of rare photographs for the ITC permanent archives and research-based educational projects. One of these projects is an exhibit, Singing to the Ancestors: Black Seminoles in Texas and Mexico, currently on display at ITC.

This Web site focuses on the history of the black Seminoles in a format suitable for general scholars, history buffs, or high school students. Subsequent Web sites using video footage and archival materials will focus on black Seminole women and contemporary black Seminoles in Mexico and Texas (also in Spanish) to be used as a curriculum supplement on diversity.
