Incidents
Related to the 1919 Storm
A hurricane
hit the area in mid-September 1919. Tía Josefa
and her family, as well as Tío Anastacio
and his family, came to Anastacia's
house for shelter. The wind was so strong that they braced heavy beams
called vigas against the doors and walls. Men added their weight
to the braces by leaning against them. Anastacia was nine years old
and recalled two men raising her as she held a kitchen knife. They recited
a special storm prayer:
"Jesucristo,
aplaca tu ira, tu justicia y tu rigor, y con gran poder, misericordia
Señor."
"Jesus
Christ, placate your anger, your justice, and your severity, and with
great power,
have mercy, Lord."
This prayer
was repeated three times. Anastacia made the sign of the cross with
the knife after each recitation, symbolically cutting the cloud. After
a few hours, the wind died down, and no harm came of it.
