Title, Exploration in Texas
by
John L. Davis
Two mariners of the late 15th century using a quadrant and astrolabe while ashore. Painting by Bruce Marshall, Institute of Texan Cultures

Exploration in Texas is an electronic, and newly revised, version of a book that has been used as a text in secondary public schools and university classes. This is a collection of stories about geographical exploration in the land that would become Texas. Some of the narratives are fact, some rather doubtful. But the intent here is not to prove wild tales. This book actually considers a critical question: What is a fact?

The printed version, Exploration in Texas: Ancient and Otherwise, With Thoughts on the Nature of Evidence, is available in our catalog and may be ordered in either hardbound, EXP-HB $15.95, or softbound, EXP-SB $11.95, by calling 800.776.7651.

Exploration in Texas:
Ancient and Otherwise,
With Thoughts on the Nature of Evidence

“...this book is not just about exploration, at least not in the traditional sense of the word. It's about the talent for imagining and researching all kinds of possiblities that these largely implausible stories bring out in us....Extremely well written and entertaining.”—Judyth Rigler, San Antonio Express-News

“...challenges traditional interpretation of early Texas history....The author has fashioned a work primarily intended as an intriguing exercise in critical thinking....[He] covers broad topics such as the interpretation of data, the evaluation of evidence, and inductive and deductive reasoning in a manner that is both provacative and fun.”—B. Byron Price, East Texas Historical Journal

This book has received a San Antonio Conservation Society Citation.
