The Spanish flag in Texas

Shipwrecked sailors and exploring soldiers began to enter Texas in 1528. These first Europeans left little behind in the form of permanent settlement until the early 1700s, when Spain established a series of missions in Texas.

In 1810 Mexico declared independence from Spain and ended Spanish influence in Texas. Texas was a part of Mexico until the Texas war of independence. Both the nations of Texas and Mexico claimed the Rio Grande area. Ownership was not settled until Mexico’s defeat in the Mexican-American War, 1846-1848.
