The black Seminole
scouts were descendants of runaway slaves
and Seminole Indians with whom they had
taken refuge in Florida. They were
relocated with the Seminole Indians to
the Indian Territory.

Later, in 1850, they moved
to Mexico where the government offered them
land. Word spread of the black
Seminoles abilities as warriors and scouts.
In 1870 U.S. Army officials asked them to come to
Fort Duncan to enlist as Indian Scouts.
