While Sam Houston was president of the Republic of Texas, he favored a policy of friendship with the Indians. However, his successor, Mirabeau Lamar, waged war, successfully and repeatedly, against native tribes. By the mid-1840s Texas Rangers, the army of the Republic of Texas, and volunteer militia units had begun to gain control of the frontier.
