In 1844 Johan Reiersen, a Norwegian, visited America in his search for a suitable site for a Norwegian colony. In Texas he met Sam Houston, who encouraged him to “choose Texas as their new fatherland.” The next year Norwegian immigration began with a colony in Henderson County.
