In the 1500s, when Europeans first came to the land that would become Texas, they found many different Indian tribes living there. In the far west the Jumano Indians lived in permanent settlements and farmed the Rio Grande and Rio Concho valleys. Because of changes in the climate of the region, the Jumanos were already declining in numbers when the Spanish arrived in the 16th century.
