Hugh O’Connor and Fray de Solis laid the first stones for the walls of Mission San José in 1768
Hugh O’Connor was born in Dublin in 1734. He entered the military in Spain and became an officer. His service in Cuba was followed by assignment to New Spain, which included Texas.
He came to Texas in 1767 and served as governor until 1770. He was known to the Indians as “Capitan Colorado” because of his red hair. In 1768 he participated in the laying of the first stones for the walls of the church at Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo in San Antonio.
