In 1823, two years after founding the Austin Colony, Stephen F. Austin hired ten “rangers” to fight Indians. By 1835 the Texas Rangers were formally organized with 56 men in three companies. They served as scouts and couriers during the Texas Revolution, and in the troubled early years of the Republic of Texas, they had two major foes, Mexican Nationalists and Indians. |
