Librarian, Legacy Keeper

OVERVIEW

Students will orally generate possible duties of a librarian.

                     SKILLS

Students will practice the skill of developing multiple responses (fluency).

                      PROCEDURE

    1. With the students, generate a list on the board of all the kinds of items kept in a library.

    2. "Mrs. A. F. Small was a librarian at the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library at the Alamo (Image #4) in the 1920s. Why does the Alamo have a library?"

    3. Continue by asking questions about the job of librarians and the purpose of libraries: "What do people do at libraries? Why do we have libraries? What might have been some of Mrs. Small's duties? What are things librarians do? What are some duties that might be specific to a librarian at the Alamo library? With the Internet, will we still need libraries?"

    4. Go around the room in order, with each student adding an answer to the list on the board. When students run out of suggestions, ask the next question or simply restate it differently.

    5. Then have students write a three-paragraph essay about the work of Mrs. Small, librarian.
